Depeche Mail 101: Catching up With, Young Widows

I shot @defender_317 & @youngwidowsband (Louisville) at #BlackCircle Brewery in Indianapolis this weekend, as they supported local noise rock band, Idiot, for their record release on @post.recordings. I hadn’t seen Young Widows since 2008 or 2009, and it’s been another decade or so since I last chatted with their singer and guitarist, Evan Patterson.

Evan and I played shows together with bands we were in back in our late teens, and is an epically talented human. Now, he's a new father, and he's beyond excited that their audience is still there after nearly a decade-long hiatus. They've been playing shows and festivals across the country recently—Seattle, Denver, and more to come.

Evan and I caught up after their set about music that isn’t too loud, fatherhood, his Goth/Blues project Jaye Jayle, and the renewed interest in Young Widows. I probably spent half the time telling him how effortlessly cool he looks on stage. Thankfully, he’s very humble about all that talent.

When I think of Louisville music, I think of bands like June of 44, Slint, Guilt, Metroschifter, and Coliseum—the post-hardcore, math-rock stuff I grew up on. Young Widows kind of embodies all that—not specifically in sound, but in the subtle elements of their look and music. To me, they’re like a perfectly worn-in pair of Levi’s, with that familiar stale cigarette smell from years in smoky bars. They fit perfectly, and much like their music... effortlessly cool.
